Tape Collages
I’ve been playing with yet another collage technique that has proved to be a well-suited outlet for me lately. The process involves using Scotch tape to lift the ink from newspapers and layering the lifted colors, images, and words to form a collage on a page in my notebook. Sometimes I include clippings from magazines or other scraps of paper as well for opaque elements to contrast the translucent portions of tape. It’s an abstract expression that isn’t limited by words (but can include them), helps me reflect on current events (since newspapers are the source), and is another way of making something from something to get the creative juices flowing.
I first observed Austin Kleon using the technique but wasn’t sure how he did it until I finally played around and figured something out last month. Like the blackouts and other collages, I highly recommend giving it a try if you’re looking for a creative outlet!
